Writing and publishing

Update a post that is already live

Send edits to a published post with “Update live post”. The web address never changes, and Blog AI won’t overwrite edits made on your site.

Last checked against the product on

Once a post is published, Blog AI keeps its own copy in step with the live one. You can edit that copy in the editor and send the changes to your site with Update live post. The post keeps its web address, and Blog AI refuses to overwrite changes someone made directly on your site.

This is for your own edits. If a post is losing traffic and you'd like Blog AI to propose improvements, use a refresh instead: Refresh a post that is losing traffic.

Update a live post

  1. Open the post from Posts. A live post shows View live post in the side panel.
  2. Make your changes in the editor, or in Google result and details (the Google title and meta description). Edits save in Blog AI automatically, and the page reminds you: "Saved in Blog AI. Use Update live post to send it to your site."
  3. Resolve any new fact-check flags. If your edits brought back a flagged statistic (for example by restoring an old version), or a flag is marked removed but its text is still in the post, resolve it first with Remove this sentence or Rewrite it in Fact check. Blog AI refuses the update until you do.
  4. Click Update live post. Blog AI saves your latest edits, checks the live post, then sends the update.
  5. Check the result. You'll see "Updated the live post on" your site, or "already had these changes" if there was nothing new to send.

There's no credit charge for updating a live post.

What gets sent, and what doesn't

SentNot changed
TitleThe web address (slug)
Body textCategories and tags
Key takeaways and FAQ (they go with the body)Publish status and date
Excerpt
Google title and meta description
Featured image, if you chose a different one or changed its alt text

Keeping the rest as your site has it is deliberate. Categories and tags are often tidied up on the site after publishing, and Blog AI shouldn't undo that. The featured image is only sent when you chose a different one in Blog AI; removing it in Blog AI leaves the image on your site.

If you only changed the Google title or description, Blog AI sends just those two fields and doesn't touch the body at all.

Posts published before Blog AI sent key takeaways and FAQs get theirs the next time you update them: Update live post lists "Key takeaways" or "FAQ" among the changes it sent.

Why the web address never changes

Changing a live post's address breaks every link to it: from other sites, from your own posts, from social media and from Google's index. Google treats the new address as a new page, and the post loses the ranking it had built. So Blog AI never changes it. If you edit the slug in the side panel, you'll see a warning, and the live address stays as it is.

When Blog AI refuses to update

Before sending anything, Blog AI reads the live post and compares it with what it last put there. It stops, and changes nothing, if:

  • Someone edited the post on your site since. Sending your version would wipe out their changes. Make the change on your site instead, or bring Blog AI's copy up to date first: for posts that were imported, run Import posts and pages on the Sites page.
  • The live post contains things Blog AI can't reproduce safely, such as embedded videos, forms, custom HTML blocks, shortcodes, galleries or tables. Rewriting the text would lose them, so Blog AI won't. You can still update the Google title and description, which never touch the body.
  • The live post couldn't be read, for example because your site didn't answer. Try again later.

This check exists because the worst thing a publishing tool can do is quietly destroy work on your site.

Seeing the change in your numbers

Each update adds a marker to the post's performance chart. For Google title or description changes, the marker says so. After 28 days you can compare clicks and rank before and after the change on the post's page. If you changed something directly on your site instead, you can add your own marker; see Reading your performance report.

Common questions

I edited the post on WordPress. How do I get those edits into Blog AI?

For imported posts, run Import posts and pages again: Blog AI refreshes its copy of posts it didn't write. For posts Blog AI wrote, it keeps its own copy, so after editing on your site, keep making changes there.

Yes. Choose a different featured image in Blog AI and click Update live post: Blog AI uploads the new image and sets it on the live post. To remove an image, remove it on your site.

Does updating change the post's date?

No. The publish date stays as it was. Whether your site shows an "updated" date depends on your theme.
