The free blog audit explained
What the free blog audit reads, every check it runs, how the score is worked out, what a free account adds and how long we keep results.

The free blog audit is for anyone, with or without a Blog AI account. You enter a website, and in about 30 seconds you see a score out of 100 and the three problems worth fixing first, with examples from the site's own posts. It needs no account, no email address, no Google access and no card.
How it works
- Enter the website. On the free blog audit page (or the box on our home page), type the site's address and choose Audit my blog.
- The audit runs. It reads the site's public pages and checks the links inside its posts. The results page shows progress and usually finishes in about 30 seconds.
- Read your score and top 3 problems. Each problem says why it matters, with examples from the site. You can share the page's link.
- Optional: email it to yourself. Choose Email me this report to get a copy.
- Optional: see everything. Create a free account (with Google, or a sign-in link by email) to see every issue with each affected post, saved to your account.
If someone audited the same site in the last 24 hours, you get that result straight away rather than a fresh run.
What it reads
Only public pages, the same ones any visitor or search engine can see:
- Your robots.txt file first. If it tells crawlers to stay away from a page, the audit respects that. It identifies itself as
BlogAI-Checkin robots.txt rules and in every request. - Your posts, found in this order: WordPress's public posts list if your site is on WordPress; otherwise your sitemaps; otherwise your RSS or Atom feed.
- Up to 50 of your most recent posts, a few at a time and gently, so it doesn't put strain on your server.
- Up to 40 links from those posts to other pages on your site, to find broken ones.
Page speed comes from Google PageSpeed Insights: Google loads your homepage and newest post, not us.
It doesn't log in anywhere, doesn't read anything private, and doesn't need access to your Google accounts.
What it checks
| Check | A problem when |
|---|---|
| Hidden from Google | A post or the homepage has a "noindex" tag or header |
| Broken links | A link in a post leads to a page that no longer exists (404 or 410) |
| Sitemap | There's no sitemap, or robots.txt points to one that doesn't load |
| Days since the last post | It's been more than a month |
| Old posts | At least a fifth of posts haven't been updated in about 18 months |
| Google descriptions | Posts have no meta description |
| Short posts | Posts are under 600 words |
| Duplicate titles | Two or more posts share a title |
| Orphan posts | None of your other posts links to a post (needs at least 5 posts read) |
| Alt text | Images in posts have no alt text |
| Past years in titles | A title mentions a past year, such as "…in 2023" |
| Page speed | Google PageSpeed Insights scores a page under 90 on mobile |
These use the same thresholds as the full content audit, without Search Console's traffic data.
How the score works
Every site starts at 100. Each problem takes points off by how serious it is:
- Serious (for example, posts hidden from Google, five or more broken links, no post in six months): 15 points
- Worth fixing (for example, a missing sitemap, a quarter of posts without a description): 8 points
- Minor (for example, a few images without alt text): 3 points
80 or more is in good shape, 50 to 79 has room to improve, and under 50 needs work. A check that couldn't run, such as page speed when Google's service is busy, costs nothing. If we couldn't read any posts, there's no score.
What a free account adds
- Every issue, with each affected post, and a Fix this link to the post in Blog AI once your site is added.
- Add your site with its address already filled in.
- Connect Google Search Console (read-only) and the audit adds: posts losing traffic, posts close to page one, posts Google hasn't indexed, posts competing for the same search, and how much of your traffic is automated (rank trackers and scrapers rather than people).
The free plan also includes the full content audit and your Actions list.
What we keep, and for how long
- The audit and its results (the domain and the report) are deleted after 30 days. A copy you save to a free account stays until you delete your account.
- Your email address, only if you ask us to email the report. We keep a scrambled form of it for limits and opt-outs.
- If you ticked the tips box and confirmed it from the report email, we keep your address, the wording you agreed to and when, so we can show you consented. You get two short emails: about 2 days later, your quickest fixes, and about 7 days later, what your Google data would add. Nothing more for now, and none once you create an account. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
The privacy policy has the details.
Common questions
The report says no blog was found
The audit couldn't find posts through WordPress's public list, a sitemap or a feed. Your blog may be on a different address (for example a blog. subdomain; audit that address instead), or robots.txt may block it.
It says my site blocked the audit
Your firewall or bot protection turned our requests away. A free account gets round it: with Search Console connected, the data comes straight from Google.
Does the audit change anything on my site?
No. It only reads public pages, the way a visitor's browser would, and never logs in or submits anything.
Does it ask AI assistants about my business?
No. The audit only checks your blog. To see how AI assistants answer questions about your business, see Track how AI assistants answer about you.
